Claim information being changed retroactively

This has been a frustration of mine for years, and I see that it still hasn't been fixed.  When a patient changes insurances, why on earth would it change ANY of the information on previous claims?  The one I am looking at right now is a previously PAID Delta Dental claim.  The patient changed to Aetna, and now at least the group number of that closed claim has changed to reflect the Aetna plan.  Closed claims (whether paid, rejected, or cleared) should be locked and no information on them should ever be touched due to future updates.  How can we ever go back to see what the plan information WAS????
