Problem with newly installed CS imaging software

Jump to solution

Hi I have just converted my radiographic images to CS Imaging software and we use a Acteon PsPix2 intra-oral scanner for the radiographs. There is a twain driver that it uses to capture the image.

The problem we have is that CS Imaging closes the twain driver immediately after one image is captured. Since our scanner is located in a different part of the practice it is very difficult for the nurse to put 2-3 plates through the scanner one after the other as she needs to return back to the software to reactivate the driver to scan the next image.

This did not happen with our previous imaging software using the same driver. I have contacted support who have not been very helpful at all blaming the driver for this problem. I have contacted Acteon and they have said its nothing to do with the driver as the imaging software decides when to open and close the driver which does make sense.

Can someone at carestream actually help me with this as ist going to be practically impossible to work like this and I am sure there must be others with similar configuartions.

Good Morning Samir,

This is Michael who you spoke with Friday afternoon, I wanted to just place an answer here to reply to your message and to provide the answer to others which may have the same question.

CS Imaging has to use TWAIN to communicate with 3rd party devices - TWAIN is an open standard aimed at standardising communication between image handling software and hardware.

The service desk have since tested this 3rd party software with Twacker, a test tool provided by the TWAIN Working Group, with the same issue you reported occurred within this testing tool. This shows that the issue is not specific to the CS Imaging software and therefore Acteon will need to perform investigation into their TWAIN implementation to see why it is closing after a single image is taken rather than allowing multiple images.

Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to be in contact with us either here on the Exchange or at the service desk.

Kind Regards,

Mike Whiting

Re: Problem with newly installed CS imaging software

Hi

I have spoken to an official dealer of Carestream imaging products and he has informed me that only 2 Imaging software on the market do not allow multiple images from the the PsPix2 twain driver and has stated that the problem is with the Carestream Imaging Software and not the twain driver. They have tested this on virtually all dental imaging software on the market.

The fact that you have stated the Twaker to test the twain driver implies that its not your software causing the issue  is factually incorrect. This only tests as you mentioned that the twain driver conforms to the twain standard and allows an image to be captured. This is exactly what the PsPix 2 Twain driver did and the image was brought in. The problem is the CS imaging software closes the driver after each image and that has nothing to do with the fact that the driver is twain compatible or not.

If virtually all other imaging software out there allows the driver to work correctly surely Caretream can ensuring the programming in its software also allows this to work. It leads me to believe the software is constructed such that only Carestream products will work with it correctly.

Please can someone call me as I am not really happy with this response. You have my number from previous calls.

Hi Samir,

I fully appreciate this is an extremely frustrating issue, especially with you feeling in between two companies.

As you know I have been in contact directly with you and the third party in question, providing you with the full outcome along with a video showing that CS Imaging is fully able to acquire multiple images at a time through other TWAIN drivers.

Should anything further be needed, I am more than happy for you to contact me directly using the details I have e-mailed to you.

Kind Regards,

Nik

Hi Nik and Samir,

Were you able to confirm a working version of Acteon PSPIX with Carestream imaging software via Twain bridge?

Hi,

We are not aware any updated TWAIN Drivers for PSPIX and it looks like Acteon's site does not date their downloads.

It seems the most recent version can always be found here: http://siupdate.soprotechnicalsupport.com/drivers/ however you would need Acteon/Sopro support to confirm if the version is newer than you have and if it supports the push of multiple images in a single session.

Thanks for the response.

I should have been more specific.  PSPIX and SOPIX will work with CareStream and PracticeWorks but from what I understand they don't auto advance and images can only be loaded individually.  I'm looking to see if this has been corrected?

Re: Problem with newly installed CS imaging software

Hi,

The CS Imaging TWAIN import stays open until the TWAIN client (PSPix) in this instance pushes images. It seems that the PSPix Twain driver does not seem to have a holding area for images to deliver them as a batch once the user has finished. Because it pushes one by one the twain interface then closes to comply with the TWAIN standard.

With for example our CS1500 Camera or CS7600 Scanner, when used in TWAIN it has a holding area for all of the acquired images once the user is finished photographing the patient the entire batch is pushed into the receiving software via TWAIN.

The only way I can see the solution you want is if Acteon develops this holding area as part of their driver solution.

Hope that helps

Rob

Hi James
This issue never got solved. Each company blamed the other and hit stuck in between. I can’t use CS imaging as it does not access the full driver for Acteon to allow multiple images. I have had to stop using CS imaging software and use another separate independent imaging software that does access the full Acteon drivers for the PSPix to allow multiple images to be transferred over without closing after each image. Was very disappointed with Carestream as this is perfectly feasible as I can do this with another independent piece of software. I feel this is to lock you into only buying Carestream imagining hardware and they do not have any inclination to allow their imaging software to work with other non Carestream imaging hardware. I had a data conversion for the images and paid for this and was informed it would work only to find out after all the the work was done that it did not work as it should.

Re: Problem with newly installed CS imaging software

Dear Samir,

I am sorry to hear that you are so unhappy. I can assure you firstly that Carestream Dental has not implemented a solution to drive you to purchase only their hardware, in fact the TWAIN implementation is there to do the exact opposite, to allow customers to combine manufacturers of equipment. The challenge here is that most proprietary drivers produce a raw image and that image is then enhanced by the imaging software to make it the best it can be. This will then be managed by proprietary image processing algorithms that many companies may not want to share. This processing is then always available for that image to manipulate as you wish each time you open it. The only way that CS Imaging could handle the RAW image from a PS Pix or any other scanner is if Acteon supplied details of their post-processing algorithms for us to add into our software. Something that is incredibly unlikely and would require a lot of development time as every third party device would need its own set of rules.

TWAIN is there to alleviate this. TWAIN allow a manufacturer to push an image that is post-processed within the twain driver to any software that meets the TWAIN standard.

however, the TWAIN standard offered options when an image is pushed to a receiving software. Once the receiving software receives an MSG_CLOSEDSREQ command from a TWAIN driver it is confirmed that the task is complete.

This is the issue that we have with the Acteon TWAIN driver, after a single image it sends the MSG_CLOSEDSREQ command.

Other TWAIN drivers do not do this, they only send that command once they have processed all images and the user has confirmed that they are finished.

HP has had this issue in the past with a bad TWAIN driver https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Archive-Read-Only/TWAIN-Scan-dialog-closes-after-each-image-t...

I can confirm that any device that supports the sending of multiple images over a single TWAIN session works exactly as expected with CS Imaging be it a camera, a sensor or a CR system.

Details of the TWAIN standard are available here: https://www.twain.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/TWAIN-2.4-Specification.pdf

I hope that this helps explain a bit better.

Thanks

Rob
